Because several readers reveal their computer responding slowly, I am posting a summary listing of basic steps you can take to solve the Windows Installer Applicationsproblem, and briefly discussing the three most common causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and lack of care.
Malware
Perhaps the greatest factor to a badly performing computer is malware.
Action 1. Update the definitions of your antivirus and run a full scan of your hard disk drive in Safe Mode. Solve any unfixable problems. Note that some viruses need additional measures until they could be removed; generally a web search will locate specific directions or a particular removal tool. If you cannot find a solution, use the BC forums to request help.
2. You’ve recently saved an application, and if the slowness is unanticipated, the problem might live there. Check this by completely removing it. A user will normally perform a websearch about the program before installing because in most cases, any potential issue with malware or inferior performance will have surfaced.
Action 3. Adware and Spyware can radically impact your computer’s functionality, and these are all over the World wide web. A very recent study showed that one out-of every 20 executable files on Websites is spyware, and 1 in 25 domains include at least one bit of spyware waiting for sufferers.
Update the definitions of your anti-spyware programs and check your hard drives in Safe Mode. Seasoned users will consistently operate two or three of the programs, because each business has its own criteria for what constitutes spyware and will just search against their own established. (A set of very good, free anti spyware applications is supplied by BC). Again, resolve any open issues before continuing to the next phase.
For further reading about Malware and some malware removal applications, use BC’s Tutorial section; most of the programs have very great Help files that describe how they operate as well as the special characteristics of each.
Uncontrolled Applications
Stage 4. Review programs that self-start on startup. You computer can become a arena for your consideration. Many programs, for example, install a rapid-launch feature which allows them to be exposed swiftly; other programs will include an automated update feature that requires them to be working in the background. Your launching Windows are slowed down by each of these and each needs a little bit of sources while your personal computer is running.
The easiest method to review and than to handle startups is to use one of the numerous small utilities available (see the BC list of free applications). You may use its startup tool that lists startups and allows you to show off any you don’t want, if, for instance, you have Spybot Search and Destroy. If you are unsure about what can be safely deleted, remember that Bc maintains a really comprehensive Startup Database that includes information about whether the item is required, elective, or not needed.
At the same time, remember that all those symbols on your own Background also take a modest amount of boot time to set themselves.
Lack of Care
Step 5. Delete unused applications and exchange old files into a CD. Unplayed games, lots of family pictures, zipped files which you have opened, applications you have not found in two years, software for that old printer you threw away last year—these are some types of files you can delete. Then use Window’s Disk Clean-up to remove temporary internet files, temporary PC health files, etc.
(Note for high level users: some professionals would include the additional care step of cleaning the Windows registry, and there are several apps to help try this. For the most part, so this step isn’t contained, you may do significant damage by making registry changes, registry care won’t make a significant difference, and unless you’re really comfortable with Windows, and carefully make backups of the registry
Step 6. Have it repair Windows Installer Applications.
Stage 7. Defragment your pc. Windows will put new documents in any available open space; defragging will set affiliated segments of files closer together so your read arm has less going around the hard drive to do, saving wear-and tear while boosting up programs.
Hopefully, since you have have ended, you’ll find a noticeable enhancement in pc operation.
