I am posting a summary checklist of basic things you can do to solve this problem, and briefly discussing the three most frequent causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and insufficient maintenance, because several readers come up with their computer reacting slowly.
Possibly the most important factor to a poorly performing computer is malware. Often this is associated with downloading a software that contains spyware, by not having browser security settings large enough, by carelessly downloading P2P files, or by failing to install security areas in a timely manner.
Action 1. Update the definitions of your anti virus and run a complete scan of your hard disk drive in Safe Mode. Resolve any unfixable problems. Notice that some infections need additional measures until they may be removed; normally a websearch will find specific directions or a particular removal tool. Use the Bc forums to obtain support, if you fail to find a solution.
2. If the sluggishness is unexpected, and you have recently saved an application, the problem may live there. Check this by entirely eliminating it. A user will usually perform a web search about the program before getting because in most cases, any possible problem with malware or poor performance will have surfaced.
Action three. Adware and Spyware can radically impact your computer’s operation, and these are all over the Internet.
Experienced customers will often operate several of the programs, because each business has its own requirements for what constitutes spyware and will just search against their own established. (A list of quite great, free anti spyware applications is provided by BC). Again, resolve any open issues before continuing to the next phase.
For additional reading about Malware and some malware removal applications, use BC’s Tutorial section; most of the applications have very great Help files that clarify how they operate too as the special attributes of each.
Stage 4. Evaluation applications that self-start on startup. You computer may become a arena for your interest. Many programs, for example, install a fast-start feature which allows them to be exposed promptly; other programs will comprise an automatic update feature that demands them to be running in the background. Each of these decreases your debut Windows and each requires a small bit of sources while your personal computer is running.
The easiest method to review and than to handle start ups is to utilize one of many small resources available (see the BC list of free applications). If, for instance, you have Spybot Search and Destroy, you may use its startup tool that lists startups and enables you to turn off any you usually do not want. Remember that BC maintains a quite complete Startup Database that contains information about whether the item is required, elective, or unnecessary, if you’re unsure about what may be safely deleted.
At the same time, remember that all those icons on your Background also take a modest amount of boot time to put themselves.
Absence of Care
Stage 5. Clean-up your hard drive (preparation for Action 7). Delete unused applications and move old files into a CD. Unplayed games, lots of family images, zipped files that you have opened, applications you haven’t used in two years, software for that old printer you put away last year—these are some types of files you can delete.
(Note for higher level users: some professionals would include the additional care stage of cleaning the Windows registry, and you will find several programs to help do this. For the most part, so this measure isn’t contained, you may do significant damage by making registry modifications, registry care won’t make a major difference, and unless you’re quite comfortable with Windows, and cautiously make backups of the registry
Step 6. Have it repair Systememergency.
Action 7. Defragment your personal computer. Windows will set new documents in any available open space; defragging will set related sections of files closer together so your read arm has less travelling around the hard drive to do, saving wear-and tear while racing up programs.
Hopefully, since you have have concluded, you’ll find a marked improvement in computer functionality.
