I’m submitting a summary checklist of basic things you can do to resolve this problem, and briefly discussing the three most frequent causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and lack of care, because many readers reveal their computer responding slowly.
Maybe the most important contributor to a badly performing computer is malware. Usually this is associated with downloading an application that includes spyware, by not having browser security options large enough, by carelessly downloading P2P files, or by declining to install security patches regularly.
Action 1. Revise the definitions of your anti virus and operate a complete scan of your drive in Safe Mode. Solve any unfixable issues. Note that some infections require extra steps before they can be removed; normally a websearch will locate specific instructions or a particular removal tool. If you fail to find a solution, use the Bc forums to request assistance.
2. If the slowness is sudden, and you have recently saved an application, the problem may rest there. Test this by totally removing it. A sensible user will generally perform a web search about the program before installing because in most cases, any potential problem with malware or poor performance will have surfaced.
Step 3. Adware and Spyware can drastically effect your personal computer’s functionality, and these are around the Internet. A very recent research indicated that one out of every 20 executable files on Web sites is spyware, and 1 in 25 domains include at least one bit of spyware waiting for victims.
Revise the definitions of your anti-spyware programs and scan your hard drives in Safe Mode. Seasoned customers will routinely operate 2 or 3 of these applications, because each business has its own requirements for what constitutes spyware and will just search against their own set. (A listing of quite good, free anti-spyware programs is provided by BC). Again, resolve any open issues before proceeding to the next phase.
For further reading about Malicious software and some malware removal applications, use BC’s Tutorial section; most of the programs have very good Help documents that describe how they operate as well as the unique characteristics of each.
Step 4. Review programs that self-start on startup. You computer can be a battleground for your consideration. Many programs, for instance, install a fast-launch feature which permits them to be opened fast; other programs may comprise an automatic update feature that requires them to be working in the background. Each of these slows down your launching Windows and each requires a little bit of assets while your computer is running.
The simplest approach to review and than to manage start ups would be to utilize one of the many small utilities available (see the BC list of free apps). Remember that BC maintains a quite complete Startup Database that includes info about whether the questioned item is needed, optional, or unnecessary, if you’re unsure about what may be safely deleted.
At-the same time, remember that those symbols in your Background also take a modest amount of trunk time to set themselves.
Absence of Upkeep
Step 5. Delete unused applications and move old files to a CD. Unplayed games, tons of family pictures, zipped files which you have already opened, applications you have not found in two years, software for the old printer you put away last year—these are a few types of files you can delete. Then use Window’s Disk Clean-up to remove temporary internet files, temporary PC health files, etc.
(Note for high level users: some specialists would comprise the additional upkeep stage of cleaning up the Windows registry, and you will find several apps to help try this. For the most part, so this step is not contained, you may do serious damage by creating registry changes, registry care will not make a critical difference, and unless you’re very comfy with Windows, and carefully make copies of the registry
Stage 6. Run scandisk / checkdisk in Safe Mode. Have it mend Outlook Express 0x800ccc92.
Stage 7. Defragment your pc.
Hopefully, now that you have have ended, you will see a marked improvement in computer operation.
