Because several readers come up with their computer responding slowly, I am posting a summary listing of basic steps you can take to solve the NotAFileErrproblem, and briefly discussing the three most common causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and lack of maintenance.
Maybe the greatest contributor to a badly performing computer is malware. Generally this is associated with downloading a software that contains spyware, by not having browser security options large enough, by carelessly downloading P2P files, or by failing to install security sections in a timely manner.
Action 1. Update the definitions of your anti-virus and operate a full scan of your hard disk in Safe Mode. Resolve any unfixable issues. Notice that some viruses require additional measures before they can be removed; normally a internet search will locate specific instructions or a special removal tool. Use the Bc forums to request assistance, if you fail to find a solution.
Step 2. If the slowness is sudden, and you have recently saved an application, the problem may live there. Test this by fully eliminating it. A user will normally perform a websearch about the application before installing because in most instances, any possible problem with malware or poor performance will have appeared.
Stage three. Adware and Spyware can dramatically effect your personal computer’s operation, and these are all over the Web. A very recent study showed that one out of every 20 executable files on Web sites is spyware, and 1 in 25 domains include at least one piece of spyware waiting for sufferers.
Experienced users will routinely operate 2 or 3 of these applications, because each business has its own standards for what constitutes spyware and will just search against their own established. (A list of very good, free anti-spyware programs is provided by BC). Again, resolve any open issues before continuing to the next phase.
Stage 4. Review applications that self-launch on startup. You computer can become a battleground for your attention. Many programs, for example, install a quick-start feature that allows them to be opened promptly; other programs may contain an automated update feature that requires them to be operating in the background. Each of these slows down your debut Windows and each needs a small bit of sources while your personal computer is running.
The simplest way to review and than to handle start ups would be to work with one of many small resources available (see the Bc list of free apps). If, for example, you have Spybot Search and Destroy, you can use its startup tool that lists startups and lets you to show off any you do not want. If you’re uncertain about what can be safely removed, remember that BC maintains a quite complete Startup Database that contains info about whether the item is required, elective, or not needed.
At the same time, remember that those icons on your own Background also take a small number of boot time to set themselves.
Lack of Care
Step 5. Delete unused applications and move old files to your CD. Unplayed games, tons of family images, zipped files that you have previously opened, applications you haven’t used in two years, software for the old printer you put away last year—these are some examples of files you can delete.
(Note for advanced level users: some specialists would include the added maintenance stage of cleaning up the Windows registry, and you’ll find several apps to help try this. For the most part, registry care will not make a major difference, and unless you are really comfy with Windows, and cautiously make copies of the registry, you can do severe harm by creating registry modifications, so this measure is not included
Action 6. Run scandisk / checkdisk in Safe Mode. Have it fix NotAFileErr.
Stage 7. Defragment your pc. Windows tends to put new documents in any available open space; defragging will place affiliated sections of files closer together therefore your read arm has less going around the hard drive to do, saving wear and tear while speeding up applications.
Hopefully, since you have have finished, you’ll find a noticeable improvement in computer functionality.
