I’m posting a summary checklist of general steps you can take to solve this problem, and briefly discussing the three most frequent causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and lack of care, because many readers reveal their computer reacting slowly.
Malware
Perhaps the most important factor to a badly performing computer is malware. Generally this is associated with downloading an application that includes spyware, by not having browser security settings large enough, by carelessly downloading P2P files, or by declining to install security patches regularly.
Action 1. Revise the explanations of your anti-virus and operate a complete scan of your hard drive in Safe Mode. Resolve any unfixable problems. Notice that some viruses require additional steps before they could be removed; usually a web search will locate specific directions or a special removal tool. If you cannot find a answer, use the BC forums to obtain support.
Step 2. If the slowness is surprising, and you’ve recently saved an application, the problem may reside there. Check this by completely removing it. A sensible user will generally perform a web search about the application before getting because in most cases, any possible issue with malware or poor performance will have appeared.
Step three. Adware and Spyware can drastically impact your computer’s performance, and these are around the Web. A very recent research showed that one out of every 20 executable files on Websites is spyware, and 1 in 25 domains comprise at least one piece of spyware waiting for sufferers.
Experienced users will often run several of these programs, because each company has its own standards for what constitutes spyware and will only search against their own established. (A listing of really good, free anti-spyware programs is supplied by BC). Again, resolve any open issues before continuing to the next step.
Uncontrolled Applications
Stage 4. Evaluation apps that self-launching on startup. You computer can become a battleground for your attention. Many programs, for instance, install a fast-launch feature that enables them to be opened quickly; other programs may comprise an automated update feature that demands them to be operating in the background. Each of these slows down your debut Windows and each requires a small bit of sources while your computer is running.
You may use its startup tool that lists startups and enables you to turn off any you do not need, if, like, you have Spybot Search and Destroy. If you’re uncertain about what can be safely removed, remember that Bc maintains a very complete Startup Database that includes information about whether the questioned item is required, elective, or not needed.
At-the same time, remember that all those symbols on your own Desktop also take a small amount of boot time to put themselves.
Absence of Care
Stage 5. Delete unused programs and transfer old files to your CD. Unplayed games, tons of family pictures, zipped files which you have previously opened, applications you haven’t found in two years, software for the old printer you put away last year—these are a few examples of files you can delete. Then use Window’s Disk Clean-up to delete temporary internet files, temporary PC health files, etc.
(Note for advanced level users: some experts would contain the added upkeep step of cleaning the Windows registry, and there are several applications to assist do this. For the most part, registry maintenance won’t make a critical difference, and unless you’re really comfortable with Windows, and cautiously make copies of the registry, you may do significant harm by making registry changes, so this measure isn’t included
Step 6. Run scandisk / checkdisk in Safe Mode. Have it fix Kb242037.
Step 7. Defragment your pc.
Hopefully, since you have have finished, you’ll find a marked improvement in pc functionality.
