Because many readers reveal their computer reacting slowly, I am posting a summary checklist of basic things you can do to resolve the Diagnostic Utilitiesproblem, and briefly discussing the three most common causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and insufficient maintenance.
Malware
Possibly the most important contributor to a poorly performing computer is malware. Usually this is related to downloading an application that includes spyware, by not having browser security options high enough, by carelessly downloading P2P files, or by failing to install security sections in a timely manner.
Action 1. Update the explanations of your antivirus and run a full scan of your hard disk drive in Safe Mode. Resolve any unfixable issues. Notice that some viruses require extra measures before they can be removed; generally a web search will locate specific directions or a particular removal tool. If you can’t find a answer, use the BC forums to obtain support.
2. You have recently downloaded an application, and if the slowness is unexpected, the issue may live there. Check this by fully removing it. A smart user will normally perform a websearch about the program before downloading it because in most cases, any potential problem with malware or poor performance will have appeared.
Step 3. Adware and Spyware can drastically impact your personal computer’s operation, and these are all over the Web. A very recent study showed that one out of every 20 executable files on Web sites is spyware, and 1 in 25 domains feature at least one bit of spyware waiting for victims.
Seasoned users will often operate 2 or 3 of these programs, because each business has its own criteria for what constitutes spyware and will only search against their own set. (A list of really great, free anti-spyware programs is given by BC). Again, resolve any open issues before proceeding to the next phase.
For additional reading about Malicious software and some malware removal applications, use BC’s Tutorial section; most of the applications have very great Help files that clarify how they operate too as the distinctive characteristics of each.
Uncontrolled Applications
Stage 4. Evaluation applications that self-start on startup. You computer can be a battleground for your interest. Many programs, for example, install a fast-launch feature which permits them to be exposed promptly; other programs will include an automated update feature that requires them to be running in the background. Your launching Windows are slowed down by each of these and each requires a little bit of assets while your computer is running.
The easiest method to review and than to handle start-ups will be to utilize one of the numerous little resources available (see the BC list of free applications). Remember that BC maintains a really complete Startup Database that includes information about whether the item is required, elective, or unnecessary, if you are uncertain about what can be safely deleted.
At-the same time, remember that those symbols on your Desktop also take a modest amount of boot time to set themselves.
Lack of Upkeep
Stage 5. Delete unused applications and move old files into a CD. Unplayed games, lots of family pictures, zipped files that you have opened, applications you have not used in two years, software for the old printer you threw away last year—these are some examples of files you can delete. Then use Window’s Disk Clean-up to delete temporary internet files, temporary PC health files, etc.
(Note for sophisticated users: some experts would comprise the added care stage of cleaning the Windows registry, and you’ll find plenty of apps to assist do that. For the most part, so this step isn’t included, you can do severe damage by creating registry modifications, registry care won’t make a major difference, and unless you’re very comfy with Windows, and cautiously make copies of-the registry
Stage 6. Run scandisk / checkdisk in Safe Mode. Have it fix Diagnostic Utilities.
Stage 7. Defragment your personal computer. Windows will put new files in any available open space; defragging will set affiliated sections of files closer together so your read arm has less going around the hard drive to do, saving wear-and tear while speeding up applications.
Hopefully, since you have have ended, you’ll find a marked enhancement in pc performance.
