I’m submitting a summary record of general steps you can take to resolve this problem, and briefly discussing the three most common causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and insufficient maintenance, because several readers reveal their computer responding slowly.
Possibly the greatest contributor to a badly performing computer is malware. Usually this is related to downloading an application that contains spyware, by not having browser security options large enough, by carelessly downloading P2P files, or by failing to install security sections in a timely manner.
Step 1. Revise the definitions of your antivirus and operate a full scan of your hard disk in Safe Mode. Solve any unfixable issues. Note that some viruses need additional steps until they could be removed; generally a web search will find specific directions or a special removal tool. Use the Bc forums to request support, if you fail to find a solution.
Step Two. If the slowness is unexpected, and you’ve recently downloaded an application, the problem might reside there. Check this by entirely removing it. A user will generally perform a websearch about the program before downloading it because in most instances, any potential trouble with malware or inferior performance will have surfaced.
Action three. Adware and Spyware can drastically effect your personal computer’s performance, and these are all over the Web.
Experienced users will frequently operate 2 or 3 of the programs, because each company has its own standards for what constitutes spyware and will simply search against their own established. (A list of very good, free anti-spyware programs is supplied by BC). Again, resolve any open issues before continuing to the next step.
Stage 4. Review apps that self-start on startup. You computer may become a battleground for your attention. Many programs, for instance, install a rapid-start feature that allows them to be exposed immediately; other programs may include an automated update feature that requires them to be working in the background. Your launching Windows are slowed down by each of these and each requires a small bit of resources while your personal computer is running.
Remember that Bc maintains a very complete Startup Database that contains info about whether the item is needed, optional, or unnecessary, if you’re unsure about what can be safely removed.
At the same time, remember that all those icons on your own Background also take a modest amount of boot time to set themselves.
Lack of Upkeep
Stage 5. Delete unused programs and transfer old files into a CD. Unplayed games, lots of family images, zipped files that you have already opened, applications you haven’t found in two years, software for that old printer you threw away last year—these are some types of files you can delete. Then use Window’s Disk Cleanup to delete temporary internet files, temporary PC health files, etc.
(Note for high level users: some professionals would contain the added upkeep stage of cleaning the Windows registry, and you’ll find plenty of apps to help do that. For the most part, so this step is not included, you can do significant harm by creating registry changes, registry maintenance won’t make a significant difference, and unless you’re quite comfortable with Windows, and carefully make copies of-the registry
Stage 6. Run scandisk / checkdisk in Safe Mode. Have it fix Cure Computer Viruses.
Stage 7. Defragment your pc.
Hopefully, since you have have concluded, you’ll see a marked enhancement in pc functionality.
