Because several readers write about their computer reacting slowly, I am publishing a summary checklist of basic things you can do to resolve the Caused An Errorissue, and briefly discussing the three most common causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and insufficient care.
Maybe the most important contributor to a poorly performing computer is malware.
Stage 1. Revise the definitions of your antivirus and operate a full scan of your hard disk in Safe Mode. Solve any unfixable problems. Notice that some infections need extra steps until they can be removed; usually a web search will locate specific instructions or a special removal tool. If you fail to find a answer, use the Bc forums to request support.
2. You have recently downloaded an application, and if the sluggishness is abrupt, the problem may dwell there. Check this by entirely eliminating it. A smart user will generally perform a web search about the program before installing because in most instances, any potential difficulty with malware or poor performance will have appeared.
Step 3. Adware and Spyware can drastically effect your computer’s functionality, and these are throughout the Internet.
Experienced customers will routinely run several of these programs, because each company has its own requirements for what constitutes spyware and will simply search against their own set. (A list of really good, free anti spyware applications is given by BC). Again, solve any open issues before continuing to the next phase.
For further reading about Malicious software and some malware removal applications, use BC’s Tutorial section; most of the programs have really great Help files that clarify how they work also as the special characteristics of each.
Stage 4. Review programs that self-launching on startup. You pc may become a arena for your consideration. Many programs, for example, install a fast-launch feature which allows them to be opened quickly; other programs will contain an automatic update feature that demands them to be operating in the background. Your launching Windows are slowed down by each of these and each requires a small bit of resources while your computer is running.
The easiest way to examine and than to handle startups will be to work with one of the numerous little resources available (see the Bc list of free applications). You may use its startup tool that lists startups and allows you to show off any you usually do not need, if, for example, you have Spybot Search and Destroy. If you’re unsure about what could be safely deleted, remember that Bc maintains a really complete Startup Database that contains information about whether the item is required, elective, or not needed.
At-the same time, remember that all those icons in your Background also take a modest number of boot time to set themselves.
Absence of Maintenance
Stage 5. Delete unused applications and exchange old files into a CD. Unplayed games, tons of family pictures, zipped files which you have previously opened, applications you haven’t found in two years, software for that old printer you put away last year—these are some examples of files you can delete. Then use Window’s Disk Cleanup to delete temporary internet files, temporary PC health files, etc.
(Note for advanced level users: some professionals would contain the additional maintenance step of cleaning the Windows registry, and you will find several apps to help try this. For the most part, so this measure isn’t contained, you can do significant harm by making registry modifications, registry care won’t make a vital difference, and unless you’re really comfy with Windows, and carefully make copies of the registry
Action 6. Run scandisk / checkdisk in Safe Mode. Have it mend Caused An Error.
