Because many readers reveal their computer responding slowly, I’m posting a summary record of general things you can do to solve the Windows 98 System Filesproblem, and briefly discussing the three most common causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and insufficient maintenance.
Maybe the most important factor to a poorly performing computer is malware. Usually this is associated with downloading an application that includes spyware, by not having browser security options high enough, by carelessly downloading P2P files, or by failing to install security areas regularly.
Stage 1. Update the definitions of your antivirus and operate a complete scan of your hard disk in Safe Mode. Solve any unfixable problems. Note that some infections require extra steps until they could be removed; usually a internet search will find specific directions or a special removal tool. Use the BC forums to request help, if you fail to find a solution.
2. If the sluggishness is unexpected, and you’ve recently saved an application, the problem may live there. Check this by fully removing it. A wise user will usually perform a web search about the program before downloading it because in most instances, any possible problem with malware or poor performance will have appeared.
Action three. Adware and Spyware can radically effect your personal computer’s functionality, and these are throughout the Internet.
Update the definitions of your antispyware programs and scan your hard drives in Safe Mode. Seasoned users will routinely operate two or three of the programs, because each company has its own criteria for what constitutes spyware and will simply search against their own set. (A listing of really good, free anti-spyware programs is provided by BC). Again, solve any open issues before continuing to the next phase.
Stage 4. Evaluation apps that self-launch on startup. You computer may become a battleground for your interest. Many programs, for example, install a rapid-launch feature which enables them to be exposed rapidly; other programs will include an automated update feature that requires them to be running in the background. Your launching Windows are slowed down by each of these and each needs a little bit of assets while your personal computer is running.
The easiest method to review and than to manage start-ups would be to use one of the numerous small utilities available (see the Bc list of free applications). If you’re uncertain about what may be safely removed, remember that BC maintains a really comprehensive Startup Database that contains information about whether the questioned item is needed, optional, or unnecessary.
At-the same time, remember that all those symbols on your Background also take a modest number of boot time to set themselves.
Lack of Upkeep
Stage 5. Delete unused applications and move old files to your CD. Unplayed games, tons of family pictures, zipped files which you have opened, applications you have not used in two years, software for that old printer you put away last year—these are a few types of files you can delete. Then use Window’s Disk Clean-up to remove temporary internet files, temporary PC health files, etc.
(Note for advanced level users: some professionals would contain the added care stage of cleaning the Windows registry, and you will find several applications to help try this. For the most part, so this measure is not contained, you can do significant damage by making registry changes, registry maintenance will not make a critical difference, and unless you are very comfy with Windows, and cautiously make backups of the registry
Step 6. Run scandisk / checkdisk in Safe Mode. Have it repair Windows 98 System Files.
Action 7. Defragment your pc.
Hopefully, since you have have finished, you’ll see a noticeable enhancement in computer functionality.
