I am publishing a summary checklist of general steps you can take to resolve this problem, and briefly discussing the three most common causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and lack of care, because many readers come up with their computer reacting slowly.
Malware
Maybe the most important factor to a poorly performing computer is malware. Usually this is related to downloading an application that includes spyware, by not having browser security settings high enough, by carelessly downloading P2P files, or by failing to install security areas in a timely manner.
Step 1. Revise the explanations of your antivirus and operate a full scan of your hard disk in Safe Mode. Solve any unfixable problems. Note that some infections require extra steps until they can be removed; normally a websearch will find specific instructions or a special removal tool. If you can’t find a solution, use the BC forums to request assistance.
Step Two. You’ve recently downloaded an application, and if the slowness is unanticipated, the problem might dwell there. Check this by entirely eliminating it. A user will generally perform a websearch about the application before downloading it because in most instances, any potential trouble with malware or inferior performance will have appeared.
Stage three. Adware and Spyware can drastically effect your personal computer’s operation, and these are around the Net. A very recent research indicated that one out of every 20 executable files on Web sites is spyware, and 1 in 25 domains feature at least one piece of spyware waiting for sufferers.
Revise the definitions of your antispyware programs and check your hard drives in Safe Mode. Experienced customers will consistently operate several of the applications, because each business has its own criteria for what constitutes spyware and will just search against their own set. (A listing of very good, free anti-spyware programs is provided by BC). Again, resolve any open issues before continuing to the next phase.
Uncontrolled Applications
Stage 4. Evaluation programs that self-launching on startup. You pc can be a battleground for your consideration. Many programs, for example, install a rapid-start feature that enables them to be exposed rapidly; other programs will contain an automated update feature that demands them to be operating in the background. Your launching Windows are slowed down by each of these and each needs a little bit of assets while your personal computer is running.
You can use its startup tool that lists startups and enables you to show off any you don’t need, if, for example, you have Spybot Search and Destroy. If you’re unsure about what could be safely removed, remember that BC maintains a very comprehensive Startup Database that contains information about whether the inquired item is required, discretionary, or not needed.
At-the same time, remember that all those icons on your Desktop also take a modest number of boot time to put themselves.
Lack of Care
Stage 5. Clean up your hard drive (preparation for Action 7). Delete unused programs and move old files to your CD. Unplayed games, tons of family images, zipped files that you have previously opened, applications you have not found in two years, software for that old printer you threw away last year—these are some examples of files you can delete. Then use Window’s Disk Cleanup to delete temporary internet files, temporary PC health files, etc.
(Note for sophisticated users: some professionals would include the additional upkeep step of cleaning up the Windows registry, and there are plenty of applications to assist do that. For the most part, so this step isn’t contained, you may do significant harm by making registry modifications, registry maintenance will not make a vital difference, and unless you’re very comfortable with Windows, and carefully make backups of-the registry
Action 6. Run scandisk / checkdisk in Safe Mode. Have it mend Virusscan Free.
Action 7. Defragment your computer. Windows tends to put new documents in any available open space; defragging will set associated sections of files closer together therefore your read arm has less going around the hdd to do, saving wear and tear while racing up programs.
Hopefully, now that you have have finished, you’ll see a marked enhancement in pc performance.
