Possibly the greatest factor to a poorly performing computer is malware. Generally this is related to downloading an application that includes spyware, by not having browser security settings high enough, by carelessly downloading P2P files, or by declining to install security patches regularly.
Step 1. Update the definitions of your antivirus and run a full scan of your drive in Safe Mode. Resolve any unfixable issues. Note that some viruses require additional steps until they could be removed; generally a websearch will locate specific instructions or a particular removal tool. Use the BC forums to request assistance, if you can’t find a solution.
Step 2. You’ve recently downloaded an application, and if the sluggishness is surprising, the problem might dwell there. Test this by fully eliminating it. A user will usually perform a websearch about the application before installing because in most cases, any potential trouble with malware or poor performance will have appeared.
Step three. Adware and Spyware can dramatically effect your computer’s functionality, and these are around the World wide web. A very recent study indicated that one out of every 20 executable files on Websites is spyware, and 1 in 25 domains feature at least one bit of spyware waiting for victims.
Revise the definitions of your antispyware applications and check your hard drives in Safe Mode. Experienced users will often run two or three of these programs, because each business has its own criteria for what constitutes spyware and will only search against their own established. (A list of very great, free anti-spyware applications is supplied by BC). Again, solve any open issues before proceeding to the next phase.

Stage 4. Evaluation apps that self-launch on startup. You computer may become a battleground for your consideration. Many programs, for example, install a quick-launch feature which enables them to be exposed promptly; other programs will include an automatic update feature that requires them to be running in the background. Your launching Windows are slowed down by each of these and each needs a little bit of resources while your personal computer is running.
The easiest way to review and than to manage startups is to work with one of the numerous small resources available (see the BC list of free programs). You may use its startup tool that lists startups and enables you to turn off any you do not need, if, for instance, you have Spybot Search and Destroy. Remember that Bc maintains a quite comprehensive Startup Database that includes info about whether the item is needed, discretionary, or unnecessary, if you’re unsure about what can be safely deleted.
At-the same time, remember that all those icons on your Background also take a small amount of boot time to place themselves.
Absence of Care
Stage 5. Clean-up your hard drive (preparation for Step 7). Delete unused applications and exchange old files to a CD. Unplayed games, tons of family pictures, zipped files which you have already opened, applications you have not found in two years, software for that old printer you put away last year—these are some types of files you can delete.
(Note for higher level users: some experts would comprise the additional upkeep stage of cleaning up the Windows registry, and there are several programs to help do that. For the most part, so this step isn’t contained, you may do severe damage by creating registry changes, registry maintenance will not make a critical difference, and unless you are quite comfy with Windows, and carefully make copies of-the registry
Step 6. Have it fix Pinpoint What Is Causing.
Step 7. Defragment your pc. Windows tends to put new files in any available open space; defragging will set related sections of files closer together therefore your read arm has less travelling around the hdd to do, saving wear and tear while speeding up applications.
