I’m posting a summary checklist of basic steps you can take to resolve this issue, and briefly discussing the three most common causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and lack of maintenance, because many readers reveal their computer responding slowly.
Possibly the greatest factor to a badly performing computer is malware.
Stage 1. Update the definitions of your anti-virus and operate a complete scan of your hard disk in Safe Mode. Solve any unfixable problems. Note that some infections require additional steps until they may be removed; ordinarily a websearch will find specific directions or a special removal tool. If you cannot find a solution, use the Bc forums to request support.
2. If the sluggishness is sudden, and you’ve recently downloaded an application, the problem might dwell there. Test this by fully removing it. A smart user will normally perform a web search about the program before installing because in most cases, any possible problem with malware or poor performance will have appeared.
Action 3. Adware and Spyware can dramatically effect your computer’s performance, and these are throughout the Net. A very recent research showed that one out-of every 20 executable files on Web sites is spyware, and 1 in 25 domains contain at least one bit of spyware waiting for victims.
Update the explanations of your anti-spyware programs and scan your hard drives in Safe Mode. Experienced users will regularly run 2 or 3 of these applications, because each company has its own requirements for what constitutes spyware and will simply search against their own set. (A listing of very good, free anti-spyware programs is provided by BC). Again, resolve any open issues before continuing to the next step.
Step 4. Review applications that self-start on startup. You pc may be a arena for your consideration. Many programs, for example, install a quick-start feature which allows them to be opened rapidly; other programs will include an automatic update feature that demands them to be operating in the background. Each of these slows down your launching Windows and each requires a little bit of resources while your computer is running.
The easiest way to review and than to manage start-ups will be to-use one of the many small utilities available (see the BC list of free applications). Remember that BC maintains a quite comprehensive Startup Database that contains information about whether the item is needed, discretionary, or unnecessary, in case you are unsure about what may be safely deleted.
At-the same time, remember that those symbols on your own Desktop also take a small amount of boot time to place themselves.
Lack of Care
Step 5. Clean-up your hard drive (preparation for Action 7). Delete unused programs and transfer old files to a CD. Unplayed games, lots of family images, zipped files that you have already opened, applications you haven’t found in two years, software for that old printer you threw away last year—these are some examples of files you can delete.
(Note for advanced level users: some experts would comprise the additional upkeep step of cleaning the Windows registry, and there are plenty of programs to assist try this. For the most part, registry care won’t make a significant difference, and unless you are quite comfy with Windows, and carefully make backups of the registry, you may do significant damage by creating registry modifications, so this measure is not contained
Stage 6. Run scandisk / checkdisk in Safe Mode. Have it mend Messenger Error Message 80048820.
