I’m posting a summary record of general steps you can take to resolve this issue, and briefly discussing the three most common causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and insufficient maintenance, because many readers write about their computer responding slowly.
Malware
Possibly the greatest factor to a badly performing computer is malware.
Step 1. Update the definitions of your anti virus and operate a complete scan of your drive in Safe Mode. Solve any unfixable problems. Notice that some infections require extra measures until they could be removed; normally a web search will find specific directions or a particular removal tool. Use the BC forums to obtain assistance, if you fail to find a solution.
Step Two. If the slowness is unanticipated, and you’ve recently downloaded an application, the problem may reside there. Check this by completely removing it. A smart user will generally perform a web search about the application before installing because in most instances, any potential problem with malware or inferior performance will have appeared.
Step three. Adware and Spyware can dramatically impact your computer’s performance, and these are throughout the Internet.
Revise the definitions of your anti-spyware applications and check your hard drives in Safe Mode. Seasoned customers will frequently run two or three of these programs, because each company has its own requirements for what constitutes spyware and will only search against their own set. (A set of really great, free antispyware programs is provided by BC). Again, solve any open issues before continuing to the next step.
For further reading about Malware and some malware removal applications, use BC’s Tutorial section; most of the applications have quite good Help files that explain how they operate as well as the unique features of each.
Uncontrolled Applications
Stage 4. Review apps that self-start on startup. You pc can become a arena for your attention. Many programs, for example, install a rapid-start feature which enables them to be exposed promptly; other programs may comprise an automated update feature that requires them to be working in the background. Your launching Windows are slowed down by each of these and each needs a small bit of sources while your computer is running.
The simplest way to review and than to handle start-ups is to work with one of the numerous little utilities available (see the Bc list of free apps). In case you are uncertain about what can be safely deleted, remember that Bc maintains a very comprehensive Startup Database that includes info about whether the item is needed, elective, or not needed.
At the same time, remember that those symbols on your Background also take a small number of trunk time to set themselves.
Lack of Care
Step 5. Delete unused programs and transfer old files into a CD. Unplayed games, lots of family pictures, zipped files which you have previously opened, applications you haven’t found in two years, software for the old printer you threw away last year—these are some types of files you can delete.
(Note for sophisticated users: some experts would include the additional maintenance stage of cleaning the Windows registry, and you’ll find several applications to assist try this. For the most part, so this step isn’t contained, you can do significant damage by creating registry changes, registry maintenance will not make a significant difference, and unless you’re very comfy with Windows, and carefully make copies of-the registry
