I’m posting a summary record of basic things you can do to solve this issue, and briefly discussing the three most common causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and insufficient maintenance, because many readers write about their computer reacting slowly.
Possibly the greatest contributor to a badly performing computer is malware. Often this is associated with downloading an application that includes spyware, by not having browser security options large enough, by carelessly downloading P2P files, or by failing to install security patches in a timely manner.
Action 1. Revise the explanations of your anti virus and run a full scan of your hard disk drive in Safe Mode. Solve any unfixable issues. Notice that some viruses require extra steps until they can be removed; typically a web search will locate specific directions or a special removal tool. Use the BC forums to obtain help, if you cannot find a answer.
2. If the slowness is abrupt, and you have recently saved an application, the issue might dwell there. Test this by fully removing it. A smart user will typically perform a websearch about the application before getting because in most instances, any possible difficulty with malware or poor performance will have appeared.
Stage 3. Adware and Spyware can drastically impact your computer’s operation, and these are throughout the Web. A very recent research indicated that one out-of every 20 executable files on Web sites is spyware, and 1 in 25 domains comprise at least one bit of spyware waiting for victims.
Seasoned customers will often run 2 or 3 of the applications, because each company has its own requirements for what constitutes spyware and will just search against their own set. (A listing of very good, free antispyware programs is given by BC). Again, resolve any open issues before continuing to the next phase.
For further reading about Malware and some malware removal applications, use BC’s Tutorial section; most of the applications have quite great Help documents that clarify how they function as well as the distinctive attributes of each.
Step 4. Review apps that self-start on startup. You computer may become a battleground for your attention. Many programs, for example, install a quick-launch feature that allows them to be exposed promptly; other programs will contain an automatic update feature that requires them to be running in the background. Your launching Windows are slowed down by each of these and each requires a small bit of resources while your personal computer is running.
If, for example, you have Spybot Search and Destroy, you can use its startup tool that lists startups and enables you to turn off any you usually do not need. If you are uncertain about what could be safely deleted, remember that BC maintains a really complete Startup Database that contains info about whether the item is required, discretionary, or unnecessary.
At-the same time, remember that those icons on your own Background also take a small number of boot time to place themselves.
Absence of Upkeep
Stage 5. Cleanup your hard drive (preparation for Action 7). Delete unused programs and transfer old files to a CD. Unplayed games, tons of family images, zipped files that you have previously opened, applications you haven’t used in two years, software for the old printer you threw away last year—these are a few types of files you can delete. Then use Window’s Disk Clean-up to delete temporary internet files, temporary PC health files, etc.
(Note for advanced level users: some specialists would contain the additional upkeep step of cleaning up the Windows registry, and you will find several applications to help do this. For the most part, registry maintenance will not make a significant difference, and unless you are very comfortable with Windows, and carefully make copies of the registry, you may do serious harm by creating registry changes, so this measure isn’t included
Stage 6. Run scandisk / checkdisk in Safe Mode. Have it repair Class Not Registered (exception From Hresult.
Step 7. Defragment your computer.
Hopefully, now that you have have concluded, you will see a noticeable improvement in computer functionality.
