I am posting a summary record of basic steps you can take to solve this problem, and briefly discussing the three most common causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and lack of care, because several readers write about their computer reacting slowly.
Maybe the most important factor to a badly performing computer is malware. Generally this is associated with downloading a software that contains spyware, by not having browser security settings high enough, by carelessly downloading P2P files, or by failing to install security sections regularly.
Stage 1. Update the definitions of your anti-virus and operate a complete scan of your hard disk in Safe Mode. Solve any unfixable problems. Note that some viruses require additional steps before they could be removed; usually a internet search will locate specific directions or a special removal tool. Use the BC forums to request assistance, if you fail to find a answer.
2. You’ve recently downloaded an application, and if the slowness is surprising, the issue might live there. Check this by fully eliminating it. A user will generally perform a websearch about the application before getting because in most instances, any possible issue with malware or inferior performance will have appeared.
Stage three. Adware and Spyware can radically impact your computer’s functionality, and these are around the World wide web. A very recent study showed that one out of every 20 executable files on Websites is spyware, and 1 in 25 domains feature at least one piece of spyware waiting for sufferers.
Experienced customers will regularly operate several of these programs, because each company has its own requirements for what constitutes spyware and will only search against their own established. (A set of quite great, free antispyware applications is given by BC). Again, solve any open issues before continuing to the next step.
For additional reading about Malicious software and some malware removal applications, use BC’s Tutorial section; most of the programs have quite good Help documents that clarify how they function too as the special characteristics of each.
Stage 4. Evaluation apps that self-start on startup. You computer can become a battleground for your consideration. Many programs, for instance, install a rapid-start feature that permits them to be exposed rapidly; other programs will contain an automated update feature that requires them to be working in the background. Your launching Windows are slowed down by each of these and each needs a little bit of resources while your computer is running.
The easiest approach to review and than to handle start-ups will be to use one of many little resources available (see the Bc list of free applications). In case you are unsure about what could be safely deleted, remember that Bc maintains a very complete Startup Database that includes info about whether the item is needed, elective, or not needed.
At the same time, remember that those symbols on your own Desktop also take a small number of trunk time to set themselves.
Absence of Care
Step 5. Clean up your hard drive (preparation for Action 7). Delete unused applications and exchange old files to a CD. Unplayed games, tons of family images, zipped files that you have opened, applications you haven’t found in two years, software for that old printer you put away last year—these are some examples of files you can delete.
(Note for sophisticated users: some specialists would include the additional maintenance step of cleaning up the Windows registry, and there are several programs to help do that. For the most part, so this step isn’t contained, you can do significant damage by creating registry modifications, registry maintenance won’t make a critical difference, and unless you are really comfortable with Windows, and carefully make copies of-the registry
Action 6. Have it fix Acrobat Data1.cab.
Step 7. Defragment your personal computer. Windows tends to put new documents in any available open space; defragging will place related sections of files closer together therefore your read arm has less travelling around the hard drive to do, saving wear-and tear while speeding up programs.
Hopefully, since you have have concluded, you’ll see a marked enhancement in computer functionality.
