Because many readers write about their computer responding slowly, I’m posting a summary record of basic things you can do to solve the 0x36ffissue, and briefly discussing the three most common causes : malware, uncontrolled applications, and lack of maintenance.
Possibly the greatest factor to a poorly performing computer is malware. Usually this is related to downloading a software that contains spyware, by not having browser security settings high enough, by carelessly downloading P2P files, or by failing to install security areas in a timely manner.
Step 1. Revise the definitions of your anti virus and operate a complete scan of your hard drive in Safe Mode. Resolve any unfixable problems. Note that some viruses require extra steps until they could be removed; generally a websearch will locate specific instructions or a particular removal tool. Use the BC forums to obtain assistance, if you can’t find a solution.
Step 2. If the sluggishness is surprising, and you’ve recently downloaded an application, the issue might rest there. Check this by fully eliminating it. A user will generally perform a web search about the application before getting because in most instances, any possible issue with malware or poor performance will have appeared.
Stage 3. Adware and Spyware can radically impact your computer’s operation, and these are throughout the Internet. A very recent research showed that one out of every 20 executable files on Websites is spyware, and 1 in 25 domains comprise at least one piece of spyware waiting for sufferers.
Update the definitions of your anti-spyware applications and check your hard drives in Safe Mode. Seasoned users will consistently operate several of these programs, because each business has its own requirements for what constitutes spyware and will simply search against their own established. (A set of very good, free anti-spyware programs is given by BC). Again, resolve any open issues before proceeding to the next phase.
Step 4. Evaluation applications that self-launching on startup. You pc can become a arena for your attention. Many programs, for example, install a fast-start feature that permits them to be exposed rapidly; other programs will comprise an automatic update feature that requires them to be running in the background. Your launching Windows are slowed down by each of these and each requires a small bit of assets while your personal computer is running.
The easiest method to examine and than to handle start ups is to work with one of the many small utilities available (see the BC list of free programs). Remember that BC maintains a quite complete Startup Database that contains information about whether the item is required, optional, or unnecessary, in case you are uncertain about what can be safely removed.
At the same time, remember that all those icons in your Background also take a modest number of boot time to put themselves.
Lack of Care
Step 5. Cleanup your hard drive (preparation for Stage 7). Delete unused applications and move old files into a CD. Unplayed games, lots of family images, zipped files that you have opened, applications you haven’t used in two years, software for that old printer you threw away last year—these are some types of files you can delete. Then use Window’s Disk Clean-up to remove temporary internet files, temporary PC health files, etc.
(Note for advanced users: some experts would include the additional maintenance stage of cleaning up the Windows registry, and you will find several programs to help try this. For the most part, registry care will not make a critical difference, and unless you are very comfy with Windows, and cautiously make backups of the registry, you can do serious damage by making registry modifications, so this step isn’t contained
Action 6. Run scandisk / checkdisk in Safe Mode. Have it fix 0x36ff.
Stage 7. Defragment your personal computer.
Hopefully, now that you have have finished, you’ll find a noticeable improvement in computer operation.
